Domestic Violence: The Role of The Proactive Physician
Faculty
Elaine
J
Alpert, MD,MPH
Associate Professor of Public Health and Medicine
Boston University School of Public Health
Boston, Massachusetts
Program Description
In this video, Dr. Elaine Alpert discusses the prevalence and types of domestic
violence, addresses myths associated with this serious public health issue,
and presents practical ways to screen for, recognize, and treat victims of
domestic violence, and refer them for additional help and support. An actual
victim of domestic violence tells her story at various points throughout the
video—how the abuse began, how it went undetected, and why she tells her
story now. In addition, Dr. Alpert models doctor-patient interactions using
direct and indirect questions that can make it easier for a patient to tell a
primary care physician about violence in the home.
